  • Lana's in the money

She's got a lot of what it takes to get along!

In season seven, after her divorce from Lex, Lana becomes worth $10 million. However, I'd like to argue that she wasn't in the poor house before. Before I begin, I would like to draw attention to the numerous times, that the Kent Farm/family is shown to be struggling financially. In "Recruit", Chloe goes to Metropolis to discuss her financial aid package (so, that she can afford college). So, one can't write off some of the followings as "well, it's television. Ever see the apartments, that characters live in, in shows set in New York?"

In "Hourglass", Harry Volk mentions that the Langs came to Smallville in 1938 and took over several farms. So, they either own, or have own, several farms in Smallville (which Lana would seemingly be the sole heir to).

In "Leech", it's established that Lana's family owns the Talon (meaning her family owns, at least, two businesses in town).

In season 3, she's shown to have her own 2002 Jeep Liberty (she's an orphan, living with her friend's family). Sure, Pete and Chloe are also shown to have cars (though, nothing as fancy), but they both had living parents. Pete's dad used to own the creamed corn factory and his mother's a judge (probably have a few bucks between them). And Chloe's dad was the manager of the local plant. Towards the end of the season, Lana sells her half of the Talon.

In season 4, Lana rents the Talon apartment. Meaning she'd have to pay rent, on her own. Along with electricity, food, essentials and so on. She can do it, without a job. In "Spell", she mentions that she maxed out her credit card, to buy a one of a kind 16th century book (just how high is her limit?). In "Forever", she's shown to have a brand-new GMC Envoy (which google says would've cost over $30,000).

In season 5, Lana attends Metropolis University. Unlike Clark and Chloe, there is no reference to financial aid or scholarships.

Now, there's probably some moments that contradict this, but the main body of evidence points towards Lana's family having some degree of wealth. Not billionaires, but enough well-off for Lana to have a comfortable life.

It could also explain the Lana fever at Smallville High. They knew that she was coming into an inheritance. Probably not the exact amount, which increased their interest. Maybe Lana's parents left her $1,5 million (just throwing a figure out there). But outsiders exaggerated it over time. Rumors fly around that she's worth $15 million, $150 million, $1,5 billion. Suddenly, she's the most popular girl at school, whom all the boys want to date (because they want her money).

That actually makes a lot of sense.
