Man. Some of those tweets, even in the spirit of "joking", were flat out disgusting. And I really hope James truly was just joking and it wasn't a sign of his personal life's dealings.

That said, I'm not sure horrible jokes from 6-9 years ago are grounds to fire someone, but it's a very charged climate right now. It doesn't take a lot to fire someone once a group of people on social media start asking for it. The weird thing is that Disney hired him in the first place without any hesitation. They didn't know about these tweets?

To some extent, I'm wondering if they should simply scrap this movie, rather than trying to find a new director (not to mention a new scriptwriter, to get a new script, so they won't have to credit James Gunn). The Guardians movies have been too much Gunn's own thing. The new director would either have to try and copy Gunn's style (which is something that never ends badly) or try to make it his/her own thing (and we end up with something that feels entirely disconnected from the previous two entries). Then there's the matter of Adam Warlock. Vol. 2 set up that Warlock is coming, so the new director and scriptwriter(s) would be painted into a corner. They'd have to use him, regardless if they themselves are either uninterested or doesn't get the character. Several members of the cast have also expressed their support for Gunn, so the new director would likely have to deal with possible hostility from the cast.

At the end of the day, not everything has to be a trilogy... and most of the Guardians died in IW. If they're revived in Avengers 4, then they've got plenty of time to change it. Edit some characters out of some shots. Do a few reshoots, if needed.

Νot surpising, given how some of the cast members reacted to Gunn's firing. Especially Batista. The best short term option was getting Taika Waititi to do GotG 3. Now it's tough to predict what this movie franchise will look like by the time GotG 3 is back on the table.

All I'm going to say is let this be a precedent going forward, so that no one else will lose their job over something they tweeted many years ago. It was a preposterous situation to begin with (while I maintain his jokes were disgusting) and it became even worse when a certain actor just recently kept his job after possibly committing a crime.

It was also a weird day to make this announcement. I guess Disney figured that people would be too distracted by the New Zealand tragedy to pay notice to Gunn's rehiring.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is going to be very different from the last two films after the events of Endgame:
Thor finds himself for the first time in 1,000 years without anything to really do, so he leaves Asgard to Valkyrie and heads out with Rocket and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Meanwhile...
2014 Gamora is now in the present, pulled out of the timeline days before the events of the first “Guardians of the Galaxy”. This Gamora has no ties to any of the Guardians (especially any romantic connection to Quill) whose gone missing to presumably find herself.

So will the third installment be about the Guardians (including Thor bantering along the way with Quill about leadership) searching for Gamora? Though obviously there will be more to it than that.
