Sara Lance might have been the girl of season 3, but just as Ra's al Ghul brushed her off as being irrelevant, the showrunners did the same in favor of Felicity. It's the only explaination for the crappy storyline and murderer reveal the season had for her death. Rebbeca Merlyn's and Shado's death had much more relevance to their seasons than Sara did.

I agree but season three had more to do with Oliver
Its about oliver's dual identity struggle

Your common link in all 3 seasons was what female motivated the leading advesaries. Rebecca's death motivated Malcolm who was Oliver's main foe of the season, main story. Shado's death motivated Slade who was Oliver's main advesary, main story. Sara's death is what motivated Laurel to become a vigilante and helped Thea move towards becoming a side-kick, B-story. Season 3 Oliver was motivated by Felicity and Ra's didn't give a hoot about any female, not even his own daughter. The female motivator was Felicity in season 3, not Sara.

It would've seemed like Sara's death may motivate Oliver to face off with Ra's but that was dropped. Oliver's identity struggle started before Sara died, immediately after his date with Felicity and Ra's didn't give a hoot about who killed Sara. The only characters for who Sara's death had any real relevance were Laurel, Thea, Nyssa and Quentin, all sub-plot characters. Sara's death was so irrelevant to Oliver that he turned over the League of Assassins to her murderer.

Ain't that the bitter truth! This is just another glaring example of the season three shoddy, inconsequential writing and plotting.

If we are looking at what woman was the biggest motivator to Oliver each season then I'd say this:

Season One: Laurel (coming home, seeking forgiveness/redemption)
Season Two: Sara (dealing with the past, correcting mistakes, making different choices)
Season Three: Thea (Everything Oliver did except for breaking up with Felicity was to protect Thea.)

When he decided he couldn't be with Felicity and be the Arrow, he needed his only family or he had nothing in his life. He's willing to tell her everything but she says she doesn't need it. He moves in with Thea. We find out Malcolm made Thea shoot Sara to get Ra's interested in Oliver. It was the threat to Thea that had Oliver claim to be Sara's killer and fight Ra's. It is one of the two things Oliver knew. That he would do anything for Thea.

It was for Thea that he went to Nanda Parbat both times - 1st to "save" her from being responsible for his death and the 2nd time to trade his whole life in exchange for hers. Then when he comes home, one of the reasons why he could drive off into the sunset was because Thea was now out there protecting the city.

Felicity was the other one thing he knew, that he loved her but she wasn't his motivator this season any more than she'd been his motivating factor in other seasons. She, like every other season, gave him advice and he listen to her in the end and it helped him find his way, but except for driving off into the sunset at the end, Oliver wasn't making choices based on trying to get to Felicity or to win her over. He decided he couldn't be with her and while it clearly made both of them unhappy, that was only a side point. Oliver's actions were shaped and directed by Thea first and foremost.
