  • Katherine Pierce>>>>Niklaus Mikaelson by far

What they try to do with Klaus (make him a psychopathic villain that the audience can't help but feel sympathetic for) has been done way, way, way better with Katherine.

Katherine is constantly on the run and in survival mode, which gains points for sympathy. You can see, feel, and understand her struggle. In turn, in order to aid her survival, she usually has some brilliant, malicious scheme up her sleeve. This gives her evil doings actual concrete, meaningful purpose. Klaus's evil doings just come off as ways to show his overpowered, original hybrid dominance. Boring and infuriating, and by infuriating, I mean instead of feeling compassionate when something horrible happens to him, you get a feeling of "Yeah. He's finally getting what he deserves." He's a Marty Stu character that needs to be humbled before any sympathy is graced upon him. Katherine has failed/been humbled plenty of times. On the flip side, Klaus always has to win. Always.

They can't have it both ways. Either he's an unstoppable force who does highly immoral, maddening things just because he can, and thereby doesn't gain any sympathy and is uninteresting, or he's an evil character that has a lot bumps along the way who will gain more sympathy for his "tragic" past, adding a bit more depth to him. Cus right now, I want Mikael to absolutely destroy him. He's too powerful for things to just continue to go his way. It makes him impossible to be an interesting, deep villain. Katherine, on the other hand is a perfectly layered and interesting evil doer. Too bad she couldn't be the original hybrid. Imagine having a well-written character who also happens to be the strongest in her world. That would've been epic on all levels.
