So did Sam pay for information that dealt with the case they worked on tonight (dead cops), or was it something else? Just kind of a weird situation where he looks at the paper, balls it up, and a close up of the trash basket when he tossed it. And its obvious from the dialogue that this wasn't a first-time 'pay for play & info' setup. It would be plausible as he immediately tells Dean he's got a case when he calls - which could have been what that piece of paper was detailing, but just seemed off somehow; like Sam appears so far in this new season ('off').
ETA: Now that I've thought about it [and read about the episode in other places] - was she a high-end escort and gave him a receipt for services bought? If so, wow Sam. Whatever happened to "(How much did it cost?) What, the girl? I don't pay, Dean."
------------
And probly just me, but I did a "ewww!" double-take when they first showed the lady, from a distance, in the bathroom doorway. From the distance, I thought it was the lady playing Gwen. I couldn't believe they were going there with Sam, but then seen it wasn't really her. I know he's messed up, but that would be taking it much farther than necessary.
