Why was his character turned from great evil buisnessman to religious nut?...thought killed character and also started watching Smallville post Luthor death so wanted to know.

Well... I think the writers had to transcend the departure of JS and Pa Kent. That combined with the need to advance Lex truely from Clark's sometimes friend to direct advisarry, they started to move Lionel into a protector role for Clark.
They had this whole storyline about "The Traveler"... Clark. Some huge society that knew of his coming to Earth many years in advance, etc. Thus the cult-like status of the people dedicated to protect the secret and so on.
It actually worked on the levels of allowing Lex conflicts outside of just Clark vs. Lex. The dynamic of the portrayed betrayal from Lionel against Lex in favor of Clark for one allowed MR to stretch his acting wings certainly.
Anyway.. that's sort of the basics of it. -
