ABC has decided renew freshman legal drama For the People, giving the series a second season renewal on Friday.
The move is a bit of a surprise given the show’s anemic ratings and lack of buzz. However, not only does the show come from a company in Shondaland that ABC wants to stay in business with, it fits the procedural-heavy brand that they’re trying to transition into and gives them something that could replace How to Get Away with Murder come midseason. For the People never benefited from TGIT branding, so ABC might be willing to roll the dice and see if they can’t turn the show into more of an asset for them.
From Paul William Davies (Scandal), For the People follows new federal public defenders and AUSAs as they begin their legal careers working at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York (aka Mother Court). The series chronicled the new attorneys as they fought fierce battles within the confines of the Mother Court and found their paths crossing in their personal lives.
For the People stars Britt Robertson (The Secret Circle), Hope Davis (American Crime), Ben Shenkman (Royal Pains), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Stitchers), Ben Rappaport (Mr. Robot), and Anna Deavere Smith (Nurse Jackie).
The season finale of For the People is set to air Tuesday, May 22nd at 10:00 on ABC.
