News has broken this morning courtesy of Deadline that MGM TV is teaming up with So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe for a new scripted version of TV and movie classic Fame.
A new version, should it happen, would reflect the modern changes in celebrity and how those interactions are different in this day and age.
The original series was set at a performing arts school and was basically Glee done seriously with original music. Debbie Allen and Erica Gimpel headlined the original show, and in 2010, KSiteTV posted a column about the appeal of the original series and why it would be a viable project to bring back.
So far, it doesn’t sound like any network is attached to the project, and this is just in the idea stages at this time. A network like The CW would probably be a perfect fit, aside from the notion that it doesn’t seem there has ever been a MGM-TV series on the network. Many of Lythgoe’s shows have turned up on FOX; maybe it could work as a Glee companion? Stay tuned for more details if and when they become available…
