CBS has added a fifth new drama to their upfront haul, as the network has given a series order to Doubt, a legal drama that had been in development last season. After recasting two of the leads, the series was put back into development this season, filming a pilot in January and immediately becoming a favorite of CBS executives.
From Joan Rater (Grey’s Anatomy) and Tony Phelan (Madam Secretary), Doubt tells the story of successful defense attorney Sadie Ellis (Katherine Heigl), who makes the mistake of falling in love with a client who may be guilty of a brutal crime. The series will be one of five freshman dramas at CBS next season, with the network having already picked up MacGyver, Pure Genius, Bull, and Training Day.
In addition to Heigl, Doubt stars Steven Pasquale (Rescue Me), Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black), Dule Hill (The West Wing), and Dreama Walker (Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23). As per Deadline, this makes Cox the first transgender actor to portray a transgender series regular in the history of broadcast television.
CBS is set to reveal its 2016-2017 schedule on Wednesday, May 18th. You can check out what KSiteTV thought the network could do next season here.
