Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa was announced today as the latest actor to be cast in the title role of the long-running BBC series Doctor Who.
His casting follows months of speculation as to who would be replacing Jodie Whittaker in the role. Folks like Olly Alexander and even former Doctor David Tennant were suspected of being the next to pilot the TARDIS.
Gatwa’s Fourteenth Doctor is expected to make his debut in the Doctor Who centenary special before fully taking on the role in 2023, which also sees the return of showrunner Russell T. Davies to the show. Davies was the writer responsible for the return of Doctor Who in 2005. Ncuti Gatwa is also the first Black actor to take on the role as a lead; of course, Ruth Martin’s “Fugitive Doctor” of recent years preceded him, but she wasn’t the primary on-screen Doctor. Also, born in 1992, Gatwa might be the first Doctor to be born after the original series concluded in 1989!
