The promos for the Season 3 finale of TNT’s Dallas – airing this Monday, September 22 with two back-to-back episodes – promise that an Ewing will die, complete with a hashtag asking #WhichEwingDies.
Building up anticipation for an episode like this is smart, especially as the show isn’t officially renewed for Season 4 yet. Hopefully, it will not be the final episode of the series. In any event, we’ve run down the candidates with our odds that they will be the ones to go, from most likely to least:
#1. Most Likely: Ann Ewing (Brenda Strong)
Okay, I admit it: I like Ann Ewing. I liked the character better in the first season when she was holding big guns and had spunk like Miss Ellie, when Bobby wasn’t yelling at her about lying every week, but I like Ann, and I really like Brenda Strong. But, whose death would affect more characters than Ann’s death would? Even Pamela Rebecca likes her. She has ties to the Ewings, and the Rylands, though Judith Ryland might actually be happy to see her go.
There’d be a lot of drama in killing Ann, and also, it’d free Bobby up to date Tracey Lawton in the future, which isn’t the worst thing in the world, since Patrick Duffy and Melinda Clarke had a bit of chemistry in their few scenes together the other week. So, sorry Ann… but it might be your time. The only thing keeping me from saying “she’s worm food for sure” is that our interview with Marlene Forte made a joke about Ann making tamales for the Ramoses. If Ann is dead, she can’t do that. Odds: 2-to-1
#2. Christopher Ewing (Jesse Metcalfe)
With no offense to Jesse Metcalfe, Christopher is boring. If poor Patrick Duffy found Bobby boring back in the 80’s, his character’s son upped the boring level to 300. What’s left for him to do? Fall for Elena again? Grow another beard?
Christopher’s death would show characters like Elena how much they ruined things, and it’d certainly give Duffy some meaty material to work with. If there’s a void in the family feud between the cousins, well, Bobby does have another son out there (Lucas, Bobby’s son with Jenna Wade), and John Ross has a brother he could feud with out there, too. Odds of 3-to-1 on this one.
#3. Elena Ramos (Jordana Brewster)
This is tricky, because she’s technically not a Ewing – but they always do say she’s like a member of the family, right?
Elena’s death would hurt a number of people, too. Christopher, obviously. Carmen Ramos, too. But it also might awaken a humanity inside Joaquin/Nicolas showing him the extent of his actions. Odds: 5-to-1.
#4. Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy)
They wouldn’t — would they? Again? It was the reunion of Hagman, Duffy, and Gray that got them all to sign up again, but since Larry Hagman died, the character of Bobby has often run in circles. Could he die, for real this time? It would certainly shock the audience… and if it fails, an older Pam could just be having a dream, revealing that everything that happened since she slammed into that truck wasn’t for real.
The dream scenario isn’t the worst idea in the world: It would explain away some plot inconsistencies, right? Odds: 10-to-1.
#5. Sue Ellen Ewing (Linda Gray)
This is the period of this article where I will have a fit if it happens. Linda Gray still remains one of THE key reasons to watch Dallas, even if the whole getting drunk again thing was a bit of a disservice to her character (though it did fit in “J.R.’s Masterpiece” – one of the great parts of new Dallas.)
I still think there’s a lot of story left to be told with Sue Ellen. I want to see more of her journey without J.R.. Can someone get her a love interest? Where’s Dusty Farlow? Or that guy who was like 20 back then but would be age appropriate now? Or is Sue Ellen’s future with Bum, a man who – despite being really kind – wouldn’t be someone the old Sue Ellen would even associate with? Odds: 20-to-1.
#6. Pamela Rebecca Barnes Ewing (Julie Gonzalo)
I’d have to say this one is pretty unlikely, since a Barnes/Ewing feud always makes for some good Dallas, and some great storylines have been set up involving Pamela. Unless the actress has decided she wants to go or something, I can’t see them not going forward with it: Odds: 40-to-1.
#7. John Ross Ewing (Josh Henderson)
For Dallas to use their junior J.R. would just be weird. I don’t see any scenario in which this could or would happen. Odds: 100-to-1.
The Longshot: Lucy Ewing (Charlene Tilton)
TNT is just messing with us. They’re not killing one of the CURRENT series regulars. Really, the Ewing to die in Dallas will be Lucy Ewing, who shows up for about 20 seconds of the episode before dying off camera. Her funeral will be the subject of the Series 4 premiere, which sees Jason Priestley taking over the role of Mitch Cooper and, of course, about 10 seconds of Steve Kanaly at the funeral. I’m kidding. I hope.

I saw Julie Gonzalo on “Extra” a couple weeks ago and she’d changed her hair. It was bobbed to just barely graze her shoulders and had blonde highlights. I’m sure they’re still on hiatus until they know about renewal, but it was a big change from the Pamela hair we’ve been used to for 3 seasons – and frankly, the new style wouldn’t fit the character.
So, it’s possible Julie felt free to change her look because she’s……
