Code Black creator Michael Seitzman revealed today that the CBS medical drama has been cancelled after three seasons.

The news doesn’t come as a complete surprise given that this decision was pushed a week after CBS released its 2018-19 schedule and Code Black‘s modest (but very steady) numbers. What might’ve hurt it the most is CBS already reaching to renew fully owned Instinct, another soft performer, and opting to not try and package Code Black with fellow co-production Criminal Minds. With their in-season schedule crammed full as it is, a summer run might’ve been feasible for Code Black, but CBS already has the more profitable (and again, fully owned) Elementary in that role.
With the cancellation of Code Black, three shows still remain in limbo – NBC’s Timeless and Champions, as well as FOX’s Ghosted. Decisions on the first two are likely to come soon, while word on Ghosted (which isn’t expected to return) could wait until it airs out its episode order in July.
The remaining episodes of Code Black will air Wednesdays on CBS.
