Hasbro SDCC G.I. Joe Exclusive Revisits An Iconic Cartoon Moment

For the last several years, the toy company Hasbro has unveiled their Classified line of G.I. Joe figures. Many of them are based on the original military action figures that many of us grew up with in the 1980s and watched primarily on the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero cartoon which aired on weekdays from Sunbow Productions. For many, the Sunbow era was the prime era of that animation which ended with a full-length movie feature, appropriately titled G.I. Joe the Movie, which skipped theaters and went right to video and TV in the fall of 1987.

G.I. Joe the Movie included what might possibly be one of the most iconic animated sequences of all time as its opening, as the team fought the villainous COBRA to protect the Statue of Liberty. Reception to the movie itself was mixed; some might have disliked the sci-fi elements of “Cobra-La,” but as someone who was nine years old in 1987, I thought the movie was awesome.

Going back to that Classified line for the uninitiated – these figures – and there are now more than 120 of them! – are at a six inch scale, nearly twice the original 3.75″ size of the originals. As such, they are much more detailed, often coming with more realistic accessories than the first time around. At this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, Hasbro is offering a G.I. Joe exclusive that is something that has never been made before as a figure — and its inspiration comes directly from G.I. Joe the Movie.

In the film – spoiler warning! – Cobra Commander is turned into a snake, repeating “I was onceee a mannn” while traversing through the snowy mountains with a blinded G.I. Joe Roadblock (voiced by Matlock’s Kene Holliday!). It’s a process, one that initially started with scaly skin and ultimately saw Cobra Commander’s silver face plate and blue uniform coming off as he became fully snake-like. As this year’s Comic-Con (SDCC) exclusive, Hasbro is offering a “Once A Man” Cobra Commander figure based on that iconic cartoon moment.

The “Once A Man” Cobra Commander comes with 9 accessory places including multiple alternate hands, an alternate helmeted head, cracked faceplate, dagger, backpack, and a weapon. There’s also an additional figure of Cobra Commander as fully a snake.

To get their own Cobra Commander figure, Comic-Con attendees can request a time slot to purchase Hasbro products at the Hasbro Booth (#3213) at the Hasbro Pulse Toy Store through the San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives Portal. Limited quantities will be available to pre-order on HasbroPulse.com after the convention while supplies last; Hasbro Pulse has a number of Classified figures already available to get fans addicted!

A gallery of the “Once A Man” Cobra Commander figure can be found below. Interestingly, there is a Roadblock figure seen in the pictures, with a different head than the one that was “01” in the G.I. Joe Classified series… maybe that’s something that will come in the future?
