Arguably the most shocking cancellation of the entire 2017 upfront season occurred after upfronts week, as NBC has cancelled legal drama Chicago Justice after one season, according to Deadline. The news had been rumored in the television trades leading up to upfronts and when NBC hadn’t made a decision by the time they released their schedule, the writing seemed to be on the wall. Renewals for marginal-at-best series like Timeless and Trial & Error, as well as NBC ordering four new dramas and pushing third-string Chicago show Chicago Med to midseason, all also pointed to franchise fatigue for NBC, which has yet to sell either Chicago Fire or Chicago PD into syndication.
The fourth Chicago-branded series in the NBC Dick Wolf-verse, with SVU comprising the fifth element of the shared universe, Chicago Justice followed the goings-on at the Cook County State Attorney’s office through the eyes of the prosecutors and investigators that work there. The series chronicled how those working for the State Attorney dealt with local politics and the media while pursuing justice.
Having averaged higher than several renewals for NBC, including Great News, Trial & Error, Timeless, Shades of Blue, and Taken, Chicago Justice starred Philip Winchester (Strike Back), Jon Seda (Treme), Joelle Carter (Justified), Monica Barbaro (UnREAL), and Carl Weathers (Colony).
The series finale of Chicago Justice aired Sunday, May 14th on NBC. You can check out the network’s full fall schedule here, as well as what KSiteTV thought of the schedule here.
