In a big presentation, DC Studios led by new leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced a number of new DC Comics-related projects including several TV projects for HBO Max. While this is surely not all that is coming from the TV side of things, here are a few highlights:
Booster Gold – Warner Bros. Television has been looking to do something with Booster Gold for a while. First, there was a pilot set up at SYFY; later, the Booster character showed up in what turned out to be the final episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. He’s from the future and uses technology to pretend to be a superhero in present day. Eric Martsolf played Booster Gold on Smallville; on Legends, he was played by Scrubs vet Donald Faison. James Gunn describes the project as “imposter syndrome with a superhero.” They are already talking to an actor about playing the role.
Lanterns – As in Green Lanterns. John Stewart and Hal Jordan. “It’s terrestrial-based, it’s got two of our favorite Green Lanterns –Hal Jordan and John Stewart…it plays a really big role in the main story that we’re telling across our film and Television. This is a very important show for us,” Peter Safran says. True Detective is seen as an inspiration. “It leads into the overall story that we’re telling throughout the different movies and television shows. We find this ancient horror on Earth, and these guys are basically supercops on ‘Precinct Earth,’ Gunn says,
Waller – No Peacemaker Season 2 just yet: first, Amanda Waller is getting her own show with Viola Davis starring. Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol) are behind this one.
Paradise Lost – A prequel series set in Wonder Woman’s land of Themiscyra. Per James Safran: “It’s going to be a Games of Thrones-ish story about Themyscira, the home of the Amazons and the birthplace of Wonder Woman. This drama is really about the political intrigue behind the society of all women. How did that come about?” says Safran. “What’s the beautiful truths and the ugly truths behind all of that and what’s the scheming like between all the power players in that society?” Gunn adds. He also describes it as “an origin story of how this society of women came about.”
“What does it mean? What are their politics like? What are their rules? Who’s in charge? What are the games that they play with each other to get to the top? I think it’s really exciting,” Gunn says.
Creature Commandos – The only animated show on this list, this is a team of freaky heroes with characters including Weasel from The Suicide Squad. Animation will allow the opportunity to do big-budget projects and this will tie in to the movie continuity. James Gunn has already written a bit of this. The lineup includes Rick Flag, Sr., Nina Mazursky. Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein… who’s the lead, G.I. Robot and Weasel.
Premiere dates and production timeframes are not yet known at this time.
