this is us nbcTUESDAY
SHILO: 8:00 The Voice; 9:00 This Is Us; 10:00 Council of Dads
CRAIG: 8:00 The Voice; 9:00 This Is Us; 10:00 New Amsterdam
ACTUAL SCHEDULE: 8:00 The Voice; 9:00 This Is Us; 10:00 New Amsterdam

SHILO: This is honestly what I get for giving a broadcast network the benefit of the doubt. I assumed that NBC, complete with its two new presidents, would learn from Rise and The Village and launch their This Is Us chasing drama Council of Dads in the fall. The launching pattern for Rise and The Village obviously isn’t the only reason both shows failed, as the former was too niche in scope and the latter had a nebulous premise that was difficult to market, but it certainly didn’t help. I thought that seeing as how the show generated a lot of buzz during upfronts, and that shows about terminal illness have a difficult time sustaining themselves on ad-supported networks, NBC would do something a little different and get it in front of This Is Us for more than just a one-off preview. But here we are with Tuesday untouched.

I don’t even hate the idea. They obviously want to nurture New Amsterdam considering its very strong non-linear numbers and the fact that they own it. The Voice’s results show has been looking a little shaky this spring season, but that could be more about format changes vs. anything about the overall health of the show. This night should do well for NBC in the fall, but it’s just that they’re setting themselves up for another disappointing spring.

CRAIG: I figured NBC wouldn’t want to mess with what has worked, at least not this year. Guess I was right.
