FX has announced that acclaimed comedy Better Things has been renewed for a fifth season.
“We are truly honored to work with Pamela,” said FX Entertainment president Eric Schrier. “She is one of the most talented artists in the business, which is exemplified through her work as a producer/showrunner, actor, writer and director. The most recent season of Better Things was its best yet and we’re excited about what’s to come in season five, as well as all of the future projects we are working on together.”
The news comes a little over two months since the show’s fourth season wrapped in late April. Considering the show’s critical standing and small but loyal fan base, the renewal holdup was solely related to coronavirus and concerns about when, if, and how the series could get back into production. The hope is that Better Things season five will be able to premiere sometime in 2021, but a devastating second wave of COVID-19 could (and likely would) push the series back into 2022.
Better Things remains the sole FX series with both a female star and lead. The network hasn’t debuted a series with a female creator or co-creator since Better Things made its debut in fall 2016.
The series is part of a scripted slate for FX that includes Pose, Snowfall, Atlanta, What We Do in the Shadows, and American Horror Story, among many others.
