According to The Hollywood Reporter, veteran comedy Baby Daddy has been cancelled after six seasons by Freeform. The show had been unofficially renewed for a seventh season by the network, but where Freeform has acquired the Black-ish spinoff that had been in development at ABC, they decided to use the funds that had been earmarked for another season of Baby Daddy on production costs for the spinoff.
From Dan Berendsen (The Nine Lives of Chloe King), Baby Daddy followed Ben Wheeler (Jean-Luc Bilodeau), a promiscuous 20-something bartender forced into fatherhood when a fling leaves his baby on his doorstep. The series chronicled Ben becoming more comfortable with his role as caretaker and provider for daughter Emma, as well as the love triangle between him, his brother Danny, and their mutual friend Riley.
In addition to Bilodeau, Baby Daddy starred Derek Theler (Shark Killer), Tahj Mowry (Smart Guy), Chelsea Kane (Jonas), and Melissa Peterman (Reba). With the show’s cancellation, Young & Hungry becomes Freeform’s lone multi-cam and only of only two shows from before current president Tom Aschiem took the network’s reins. In its attempt to become edgier and more millennial-focused, Freeform has already started its move away from multi-cam comedy by developing Alone Together, a single cam that will premiere sometime in 2018.
The series finale of Baby Daddy is set to air Monday, May 22nd on Freeform.
