Andi Mack to Feature First Disney Channel Coming Out

Disney Channel has announced that season two of Andi Mack will feature the first Disney Channel character to come out.

“Andi Mack is a story about tweens figuring out who they are,” said Disney Channel in a statement. “(Creator) Terri Minsky, the cast and everyone involved in the show takes great care in ensuring that it’s appropriate for all audiences and sends a powerful message about inclusion and respect for humanity.”

The storyline will focus on Cyrus coming to realize that he, too, has feelings for Jonah that extend beyond friendship. Not only will Cyrus have to deal with the confusion and emotional complexities that come with being a gay teenager, not only will he have to wrestle with how to tell new girlfriend Iris about himself, he’ll have to keep Andi from finding out about his feelings for Jonah, as she’ll spend season two hashing out her own complicated feelings for her longtime crush. 

From Terri Minsky (Lizzie McGuire), Andi Mack follows Andi (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a middle schooler who finds out that the woman she always thought was her sister is actually her mother and that the woman who’s raised her since birth is actually her grandmother. The series chronicles Andi’s adjustment to this new life, including her attempts to forge a relationship with her biological mother, as well as her supportive friendship with pals Cyrus and Buffy and her crush on classmate Jonah.

Season two of Andi Mack is set to premiere this Friday at 8:00 on Disney. You can check out sneak peeks of season two below.
