Starz has announced that the eight-episode first season of its upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods will premiere Sunday, April 30th at 9:00.
Adapted for television by Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) and Michael Green (Kings), American Gods tells the story of a brewing war between gods of old and new stemming from the New Gods being able to offer the money and celebrity to prospective followers that the Old Gods can’t (and won’t). The Old Gods fear irrelevancy and losing the power they once held, so they turn to unorthodox measures in order to protect what’s theirs. The series centers on ex-con Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), still mourning the death of his wife, who accompanies conman Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) on a cross-country journey. Only Mr. Wednesday is really an Old God hellbent on building an army and reclaiming the glory he lost along the way.
In addition to Whittle and McShane, American Gods is set to star Yetide Badaki (Masters of Sex), Crispin Glover (Back to the Future), Orlando Jones (Sleepy Hollow), Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies), and Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom).
American Gods joins a Starz scripted slate that includes Power, Outlander, and Ash vs Evil Dead. The network will be saying goodbye to pirate drama Black Sails later this spring.
