WEDNESDAY
CRAIG: 8:00 Riverdale; 9:00 Legacies
SHILO: 8:00 Riverdale; 9:00 Glamorous
CRAIG: And here is where “The CW renews everything” gets tricky. I really do get why All American could/should/would air during football season. But moving to Friday nights, when high school football is actually played, would be a disaster, so in my schedule, I think they should save it for the right time. Instead, the Riverdale lead-out I have for Fall is Legacies, a show that really surprised me and others, which I think will get a huge Riverdale-style bump now that audiences have caught up on Netflix. The Vampire Diaries spin-off is so good, you all. Watch it.
A new entry like Katy Keene or Glamorous could pop in at midseason.
SHILO: The buzz around Glamorous seems high enough that The CW will probably order it. They lost both of their critical darlings this year in Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, so while they stockpile IP-based shows to help pay the bills, this feels like a brand asset they take a flier on and try to get back into the awards conversation. As such, I feel like they’re going to premiere it in the fall in hopes of getting Golden Globe nominations for the show and star Ben J. Pierce, whose performance has been singled out by the trades. Though Fridays with Dynasty is a possibility if they want to give the show an 8:00 cushion and not place too much ratings expectation on something that will be very niche, I went with Wednesdays at 9:00. It’s not a horrible fit with Riverdale, which The CW loves to cycle shows after, while airing mid-week could help the show as far as visibility and cultural conversation. And where it’s likely not a 22-episode show, the network can slide something else here (Nancy Drew? Katy Keene?) circa midseason.
