WEDNESDAY
SHILO:
CRAIG:
ACTUAL SCHEDULE: 8:00 Riverdale; 9:00 All American
SHILO: I have the same issue with Wednesday that I have with Sundays. It feels like a lineup put together based solely on superficial similarity and puts the new show in a tough spot. Riverdale and All American might both be teen dramas, but based on the latter’s trailer, it looks like it’s tonally a completely different beast than its lead-in and the two shows seem to tackle the teen drama genre in very different ways. I’m still not convinced of Riverdale‘s lead-in power, given that the only success after it this season was already established The Originals, and where it likely won’t get the same Netflix boost that it got this year (i.e. poorer reception, more episodes), The CW is boxing All American‘s potential into “critical darling we keep as a brand asset”. Which is especially tough considering that it’s premiering with a reboot and a spinoff, so it feels the most expendable right now. A shame.
CRAIG: All American looks like a quality series that will tackle social issues, which makes me shake my head and wonder why it is not paired with Black Lightning. Riverdale has gone to a reality of its own and it is not much of a lead-in; despite both series taking place in high schools, I’m not certain that audiences of one will watch the other. It’s a shame The CW can’t just flip Riverdale, which would benefit from a Flash lead and maybe even help The Flash, with Black Lightning, which would be a perfect lead-in for All American.

Yeah, for CW, it’s all about the streaming deals and international audience, not Nielsen viewers. I do hope Sara Lance can show up on Arrow a few times now Quentin is gone and she’s met E-2 Laurel.
