In the early part of the last decade, Alias by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos introduced former superheroine-turned-private investigator Jessica Jones to the comic book world, and gave Marvel Comics their first true “Mature Readers” title for their MAX line of comics.
Now, Jessica’s finally set to come to TV, and it appears she’ll beat The Hulk to television screens. It won’t be called Alias, though, for obvious reasons, the largest being that the title was used for a somewhat popular ABC series around the same time the comic book was being published. Because of this, the show will instead be called AKA Jessica Jones… though surely they can come up with a better title than that.
Variety revealed today that Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg is behind the project. Rosenberg’s previous credits also included a stint as an executive producer for Dexter.
They note that Rosenberg was drawn to the Jessica Jones character because she is “deeply flawed with a biting sense of humor.” Brian Michael Bendis will be a consultant on the series, and Jeph Loeb will executive produce.
While Jessica Jones as a character in a Power Man and Iron Fist TV series would be even cooler – this is a character that seems well suited for TV, and it may be on our screens as early as Fall 2011.
As for who to play Jessica Jones – how about Jennifer Garner? Wouldn’t that be ironic to go from one Alias to another? (And yes, I’m kind of kidding.)
