Say you are a big fan of Blood & Oil on ABC, or The Player on NBC. You’re really feeling the storyline, and then, bam, no more new episodes.
“But they haven’t even had 13 episodes yet!” you think.
Sadly, the latest model for TV shows that aren’t performing too well in the ratings is a cut-down of the total number of episodes ordered by the network. It happened with Minority Report on FOX, which will have only ten episodes rather than13; and now, Blood & Oil has had its episode order trimmed from 13 episodes to 10 by ABC, and The Player on NBC will see Game Over by Episode 9.
Now, it is quite possible any of these series could return for second seasons, and of course, if ratings pick up between now and their respective season finales, that would definitely help the show’s cases, but in TV 2015, a cut down order might equal cancellation. Enjoy these shows while you can, and let’s all hope for some story resolutions before these series stop with the new shows.

What sucks about The Player is that NBC told them 9 is it in the middle of production of #9, so the writers have zero chance of crafting a revolution. I know the show isn’t a buzzy hit in the demo, but it’s been steady in the Live millions every week and doing no worse than Parenthood and others have done in the 10PM slot. NBC needs to realize they’re never going to get back to the “E.R.” days because TV is SUCH a different landscape now and actually let a show BUILD in that slot. The Player is a better show than it’s being given credit for.
