Interview: Thomas Dekker Has A New Secret — The Secret Circle

Actor Thomas Dekker has had quite a whirlwind ride the past few years.

Following popular runs in Heroes and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dekker then went on to do movies, such as the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, Gregg Araki’s Kaboom, the HBO drama Cinema Verite, and much more. Now, the busy actor and musician will be returning to television September 15 with a new CW television series called The Secret Circle.

We caught up with Mr. Dekker in a roundtable press junket at this year’s Comic-Con, where he spoke a bit about his character of Adam and what we might expect from him.

Please do not reproduce this on other websites. Instead, just place a link to KSiteTV! Questions to Thomas are posted in bold; answers are not.

What attracted you to this role? After playing so many different characters over the years, this seems to be in an even different direction.

The roles that I’m really drawn to – which is why they often tend to be more specific types of material – is that I really like duality in a character. I don’t want it just to be one note. I like the idea with this character that he’s this really All-American, strong, grounded, good guy, and he’s got his girlfriend, and I don’t feel he would have ever chosen to be a witch. I think it just sort of came out of nowhere. But in order to play with witchcraft and spirituality and nature and the unknown, there has to be an element of grace and feeling, and of the things that we associate with female characters. So I like this blend of being a strong guy without an agenda, who’s not weird or different, but he is, just innately, by his blood.

I like this idea of getting to do something big and pulpy and on TV again, that hopefully a lot of people will easily connect to. I miss that. I love doing crazy Indies, but that’s really fun too.

Can you talk about having Britt Robertson as your leading lady?

Britt and I did a movie together four years ago, where I was a witch, and I teach people about spells, and she’s even trapped in a burning car at one point, so there’s a lot of weird connections for us.

Britt and I get along really well. We joke it’s what everybody’s supposed to say, but the whole cast gets along really well. The six of us really do have a great relationship. Yeah. She and I, I think, have a nice chemistry on camera. It’s very adorable.

Is there any possibility we might hear some of your music in The Secret Circle?

I pray. That would be really fun. I’d love to do something. It would be really fun. Maybe Adam’s a musician? Who knows.

Is there anything you’re bringing to the character that you didn’t see in the script?

I think initially, the way [Adam] was written, he was much more like a kid in school, and I’m trying to give him a lot of composure. I want him to be very balanced in a weird way. I think, originally, he was more troubled by his father, and I’m trying to give him more maturity. He understands his father’s predicament, and respects it, and he understands his devotion to Diana. I want him to be a bit wiser, and I think they’re now writing him more in that direction.

I just get tired of stereotypical young people on young people shows, so fortunately, we’re trying very hard to avoid that.
