The Vampire Diaries #6.5 “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here” Recap

Tyler accidentally causes a disaster at the homecoming corn maze, sending Elena, Alaric, Liam, and Jo into saving move. Caroline misses the party to track down Ivy after Stefan dumps her with his newbie vamp girlfriend. Meanwhile, Damon, Bonnie, and Kai are ready to escape. Here is a recap of the Vampire Diaries episode “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here.”

    Recap:

Stefan’s a little disappointed that Tripp has kept Enzo alive and a little shocked that Tripp’s waged a war against vampires starting in Savannah. Tearing through Stefan’s blood stash, Ivy blames him for everything. She charges at him, but he snaps her neck and visits Caroline, who’s in a towel. Awkward. More awkward is that Ivy pops out of his suitcase. While he gets a daylight ring from Liv, Stefan wants Caroline to teach Ivy control. Ivy picks up on Caroline’s hostility toward Stefan and would rather party than be stuck here, so she snaps Caroline’s neck and runs off.

VD605a_0213bDuring Alaric’s class about the supernatural origin of the homecoming party, Tyler asks Liv to join him at the homecoming corn maze; she declines. Elena has better luck convincing Liam, Alaric, and Jo to go. But first, Stefan catches Alaric drinking alone in his classroom. Alaric’s disapproval is palpable, especially after Stefan asks him to compel Ivy to go away so he can successfully start over for real this time. Ivy has herself a little snack and fails at compelling him to forget. On Caroline’s hunt for Ivy, Stefan appears and admits he was halfway out of town. Ivy calls Caroline in a panic, but Tripp abducts Ivy before Caroline arrives.

Tyler checks a text while driving and accidentally hits Ivy’s snack, sending his truck barreling through the homecoming party. Liam aids a wounded classmate, but it looks like she’s a goner. Elena sends Liam away and feeds the girl her blood. Jo forces Alaric to put pressure on victims’ wound, and he struggles to keep his vamp-ness at bay. Crawling out, Tyler finds the kid barely alive and enlists Elena’s help to keep the victims from dying and triggering the werewolf curse, but Elena doesn’t know where he is. On speakerphone, Jo coaches Tyler on assessing the wounds. The kid’s not going to make it. Liv joins Tyler and suffocates the kid for him. Since she wants to ignore having killed someone, Tyler promises he won’t waste his new lease on life.

Kai meets up with Damon and Bonnie on their trek through the forest. They’re waiting for the eclipse so they can use the ascendant directly beneath the Gemini constellation. While Damon digs a massive hole, Bonnie demands to see the spell from Kai. When he refuses, she temps him to make good on his promise of taking all of her magic. Kai only takes part, leading Bonnie to realize he doesn’t know the spell. Kai’s useless, so Bonnie throws an ax in his chest. Bennett magic was used to create this place, so Kai needed her alive to escape. Damon and Bonnie enter a cave and surprise! Kai sends an arrow through Bonnie; he can’t die. Fighting Kai, Damon gets an arrow through himself too. Bonnie knocks Kai off Damon and tosses Damon the ascendant; he’s going home.

Back at the Whitmore clinic, Jo tells Alaric she thinks he’s great, brave, funny, and maybe the most attractive man she’s ever seen, plus she feels as if she was meant to know him. He pays her compliments as well, then tries to compel her to think he’s boring. It doesn’t work. Stefan takes his bourbon to the Salvatore crypt and gives the air a speech about how he’s not doing so well without his brother. In frustration, Stefan throws the bottle, which Damon catches. They share a long-anticipated embrace.

    Comments:

    – This season has been on a roll, and “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here” was no exception. While it wasn’t without its problems, the episode kept up the tension well enough to be an enthralling hour.

    – Ivy came across as a little too similar to Vicki when she was first turned. The peppy party girl wanting to seize her vampire nature is a nice contrast to how the main characters reacted when placed in that situation, but it’s also kind of grating.

    – There was a school-wide party two episodes ago, why did they decide to do another one so soon? It seemed like a convenient means to get as many people in one location as possible to increase the suspense and chances of Tyler possibly killing one.

    – “Who are you right now?” – Caroline to Stefan, asking the question we’ve all been wondering. Even though he’s grieving, his attitude this season has been hard to support. Elena never gave up on him when he went into ripper mode, and Caroline hasn’t lost her faith in his goodness, so him running away from them and their struggles severly undercuts their friendship.

    – After Damon reappeared on Earth, there was no act so perfect for his character as scolding Stefan for almost wasting perfectly good bourbon. In addition, Stefan’s face of shock and confusion and relief upon seeing his brother was the most heartwarming moment this season. Their reunion was well worth the wait. But, how did Stefan go to the cemetery if it’s in Mystic Falls? Was this a detail overlooked by the writers or is it some sort of clue?

    – Poor Bonnie. Hopefully she’ll soon be rewarded for always putting others before herself. If Grams sent her to a place created by family magic and housing a crazy murderer, there must be another way out or a way to pull her out from the land of the living. Sending only Damon home was an interesting twist to what was expected and promises to stir up some awkward drama for Elena.

    – Are Elena and Tyler favor friends? Of course, Elena’s not going to let his werewolf gene kick in if she can help it. It just got me to thinking about how much I’d like to see them have more interactions in the near future. Their relationship has not been fleshed out anywhere near its potential.

    – So, Jo’s immune to compulsion. And the plot thickens. In the scope of this series, her comment about not liking supernatural creatures could very well be a veiled reveal of her knowledge about their existence and/or her connection to those trying to take them out. How crazy would it be if she and Tripp were in cahoots!?

    – “Enzo turned me into something straight out of Buffy the Vampire Slayer! … Look at me. I used to be a decent person. I got good grades. I went home for Christmas. I had a freakin’ Etsy store. And now I am a killer.” – Ivy

    – “Damon may be gone, but I can still find pleasure in judging his life choices.” – Alaric

The old cemetart was outside the “Traveler Magic Zone” (from 5×22) and was actually the place where Bonnie (and the Scooby Gang) gathered when they brought everyone back from the Other Side last seasons.

The crypt was also where Elena talked to Hallucination!Damon for the last time in 6×01. Look over Damon’s left shoulder and you’ll see the broken stained glass window from the candle she threw.

No mystery about why this location is important.
