New Fall TV Sundays: Six Questions

Last year around this time, as the new Fall TV season was about to begin, KSiteTV’s Craig Byrne and Shilo Adams teamed up to ask six questions about a given night’s new TV, previewing the new Fall shows while at the same time attempting to predict how things will go for them.

The last time we did this, we each answered the same six questions. This time, we alternated, with Craig asking Shilo three questions, and Shilo asking Craig three questions, to prevent repetition. We will be posting one of these columns every night this week, so be sure to come back for more!

The questions posts will be split into multiple pages, so be sure to nagivate below. Let’s get started, shall we?

104659_162_1bCRAIG: Will Madam Secretary work for CBS as well as their other Sunday night shows have?

SHILO: Madam Secretary has possibly the weirdest time slot of the new fall shows. It has the look, feel, and pedigree of a 10:00 drama, yet it’s being placed in the 8:00 hour and forced to deal with near constant football overruns in the fall. Granted, the early time slot should help boost its ratings on days when CBS has the afternoon NFL game, but that unsteady scheduling isn’t conducive for new shows finding their footing, especially quiet adult dramas that could easily get lost in the shuffle.

It helps that CBS knows about the impact of overruns, so Madam Secretary might have a longer leash than it would have on another night, but I can’t help but wonder why the show wasn’t held for midseason or at least placed at 9:00 on Sundays. Broadcast trying to out cable cable tends to not work out, so Madam Secretary isn’t exactly being held back from blockbuster status, but it’s being held back by unsteady scheduling, being the lead-in for what could be it’s most compatible lead-in prospect (The Good Wife), and airing on a night when cable tends to rule the roost.

Do I think the show will flop? No, I think it more than likely makes it through a 22-episode first season, considering that it has the makings of the next Good Wife. What I’m curious about, though, is how the ratings look come 2015 and whether the show lasts in the 8:00 slot for the entirety of the season.
