The CW’s new drama The 100 premieres this Wednesday, March 19, as it sees one hundred “juvenile delinquents” sent from a dying space station to see if they can survive on Earth. This new world provides a never-before-felt environment for these characters who all grew up living in the station.
One of those characters is Bellamy Blake as played by Bob Morley. Morley is a familiar face to Australian audiences for his roles on Neighbours and Home and Away, but this is his first major U.S. series role. The very take-charge Bellamy – whose reasons for getting exiled to Earth will be revealed in the series pilot – provides a stark contract to Eliza Taylor’s Clarke, who has her own thoughts and ideas on how the 100 should live, and what rules the young people should abide by.
“They’re pretty much at loggerheads for most of that,” Morley told us when we visited the show’s Vancouver, BC studio during Season 1’s filming. “But it is that kind of Lord of the Flies thing where there are no rules, and survival of the fittest, I guess, and the strongest survive. Bellamy ends up being in a position of leadership, [and] that’s tested throughout the whole storyline. The rules are always shifting. It’s not like we’re playing on a level playing field, because those rules have to change in accordance to what is happening in our environment. So, sometimes rules are forced upon us by the world we’re living in, with the radiation and so forth. It’s hard to define the terms of the actual rules, because the game’s always changing,” Morley explained.
Like the audience, we will be learning Bellamy’s backstory and his connection to another character, Octavia, as the series progresses, with a flashback story planned within in the first half of the season. “I’m hoping to learn a lot about Bellamy and Octavia,” he said. “They’re functional and severely dysfunctional at the same time. So I think as the story progresses, we’ll learn more as to why they have the certain positions that they do have. It’s definitely quite a tumultuous and emotional relationship they have. I’m looking to find out more, just as much as you guys are,” he enthused.
