DC’s Stargirl Cancelled By The CW

The CW bloodbath continues in the wake of the network being acquired by Nexstar: Only a week after news came that Nancy Drew would be ending, now we know DC’s Stargirl will end after the current TV season as well. Season 3 – which is currently airing – will be the show’s last. The series is said to have been prepared with a satisfying conclusion in the finale.

Originally developed for the now-defunct DC Universe service, the show became shared with The CW where it has remained a summer staple for three seasons. The series featured a group of young superheroes dealing with the legacies of the past, and included DC concepts such as the Justice Society of America.

“Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons. With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure,” Executive Producer (and creator of Courtney Whitmore) Geoff Johns said. “The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life. Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible — with grace, strength and humor — exceeding my wildest expectations. I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I’m beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons. Most series never get this far. We couldn’t be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built!”

Series star Brec Bassinger also had a statement: “Getting to play Stargirl and be a part of the DC Universe has been the greatest honor, and I am so grateful for every moment of it. I would like to thank our fearless leader Geoff Johns, along with WBTV, The CW, the cast and crew of Stargirl, and of course, the fans. Thank you. This show will forever live in my heart.”

Social media has revealed that DC’s Stargirl Season 3 isn’t the absolute last we’ll see of the character: Bassinger has been spotted on the set of HBO Max’s Titans, and beyond that, she has expressed interest in appearing in future crossovers.

Following the cancellation of DC’s Stargirl, The CW will only have two DC Comics series after the current TV season, assuming both get renewed: Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights. Both premiere in 2023 alongside the final season of The Flash. It’s also the third DC-based cancellation of 2022, with Batwoman and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow also getting the network Thanos snap. (Yes, we know Thanos is Marvel; go with it.) Nexstar is cutting costs and going for a different direction in their programming than they had before under network President Mark Pedowitz, who championed many of the DC series in the past.
