The Winchesters: Revisiting Familiar Faces & What’s Important For Jensen Ackles

With 15 seasons and 327 episodes of Supernatural, there are a lot of characters in that lore… including some folks like Bobby Singer who would have been alive in the 1970’s. During a recent Q&A with the press, we asked the question: Might we see any of them on The Winchesters which premieres next week on October 11?

“100% yes,” Executive Producer Robbie Thompson confirmed. “I don’t think I can spoil exactly who, but we have some very familiar faces that are gonna be coming up in an episode we’re gonna shoot in a couple of days. And then some more after that, and then some more that I can’t even reveal!”

He even referred to “someone on this Zoom as well, at a certain point,” gesturing towards Jensen Ackles.

“We also have plans, not just to bring back some of our familiar faces, but younger versions of the characters that maybe we haven’t seen yet,” he added.

One familiar thing that will hopefully be present in every episode is the heart that Jensen Ackles felt in Supernatural. “At the end of the day, the show was about the relationship between these two brothers. You could paint as many ghosts and demons and vampires and ghouls as you wanted on that canvas, but at the end of the day, it really came back to the relationship that these two guys had, and how they fought, not only for the greater good, but they fought for each other,” he explained.

“I felt like if we could tell that with John and Mary, but also have this love story be kind of the kicker, I felt like that was really important. That’s something that Robbie and Danneel and I talked about at length, was making sure that this truly had the heart that a show needed…. that you can dress it up with all the frills and thrills, but it’s gotta have that relationship, and it’s gotta have a cast of characters that you really want to keep coming back week to week to watch,” he continued. “I feel like we have that and we’re doing that. I keep coming back and wanting to watch them. I keep reading the next stories intently and wanting to know what’s gonna happen. It’s just insanity. I love it,” Ackles enthused.

As for what to avoid, Jensen Ackles pointed to “rewriting history” being an important thing to avoid.

“That’s obviously something that has been a topic of discussion with fans and critics: how we’re going to navigate what has already been established.,” he said, making a Back to the Future analogy. “We don’t want the picture of Dean and Sam to start being erased. This is not what we’re set out to do. We’re trying to preserve everything that we possibly can on the mothership. I think Robbie and his crack team of writers have come up with the way of doing that in a way that is servicing this show, just as much as it’s serviced or will be servicing Supernatural,” he promised.

The Winchesters premieres Tuesday, October 11 on The CW. Read more Winchesters content here on KSiteTV!

If you’re going to bring back characters, using SUPERNATURAL cast to float the Prequel, why not just give us SUPERNATURAL.. This is Soooo unfair to Jered, “SAM”. He has been completely cut out. Didn’t even let him know about the prequel.

Jared is doing just fine as the star of one show on The CW and Executive Producer of two. Both Jared and Jensen have the right to want to do new roles after 15 seasons. Considering Jensen directed an episode of Jared’s show, I think chances are good that they’re more than okay with each other now.
