After cancelling widower comedy The Unicorn and legal drama All Rise, CBS opted to renew a pair of freshmen comedies in B Positive and United States of Al.
From Marco Pennette (Mom), B Positive follows neurotic therapist Drew (Thomas Middleditch), a newly divorced dad who finds himself in renal failure and looking for a kidney donor. Losing hope, he runs into an old high school classmate who volunteers to him her kidney, setting the two off on a journey that would change their lives.
In addition to Middleditch, the series stars Annaleigh Ashford (Masters of Sex), Linda Lavin (Alice), Terrence Terrell (Bigger), David Anthony Higgins (Malcolm in the Middle), and Darryl Stephens (Noah’s Arc).
From David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari (The Big Bang Theory), United States of Al chronicles the friendship between Marine veteran Riley (Parker Young) and Awalmir aka Al (Adhir Kalyan), the interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan. While Al is excited to start a new life in the United States, Riley has been having difficulties readjusting to civilian life following his last tour.
In addition to Young and Kalyan, the series stars Kelli Goss (The Ranch), Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), and Elizabeth Alderfer (Disjointed).
The CBS comedy roster for 2021-22 includes The Neighborhood, Bob Hearts Abishola, Young Sheldon, B Positive, and United States of Al, as well as newbies Ghosts and Smallwood. The network is set to reveal its fall 2021 schedule on Wednesday.
