Blu-ray Review: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete Fifth Season

The fifth season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow hits Blu-ray and DVD today (September 22). The set includes all 15 episodes of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 5 and a whole lot of extras — the Blu-ray set even includes all five episodes of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, bringing viewers 4 additional installments of good TV. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has provided us with a copy of the Blu-ray, so here’s the KSiteTV review!

The Episodes: I feel like I say this in every review, but the Blu-ray picture and sound on these sets is excellent. For Season 5, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow embraced the anarchist nature of the series even further with an updated title sequence. We also got to meet new characters like Behrad, Astra Logue, and a new version of Zari, as history has changed a bit. I’m still a bit annoyed that Ray and Nora don’t make it through the whole season, but don’t let that stop you: There are some fantastic hours, including “The One Where We’re Stuck On TV” where we see the Legends… stuck on TV. New character dynamics are created and tested, too, especially in light of what happens to certain characters.

For some time the team seems a little separated, so it’s nice to see a lot of them back together in the end. The new season also features some of the recurring characters some have come to love.

Packaging & Design: While the cover art is cool, some of the images on the box art appear to be from Season 4 – the Constantine shot in particular. While I understand using the “traditional” Legends of Tomorrow logo to match the other sets, I wish the box art better matched the craziness of the amazing new Season 5 opening titles.

The Extras: There are a lot of deleted scenes, including an “Avalance” scene that people are going to love. Sadly, good things do end up on the cutting room floor. The “Production Theater” featurette was probably not as amusing as they intended it to be, and I admit, I’m kind of over gag reels that all seem to feature the same mugging for the camera. Both of those extras were probably made for the crew, who’d get more amusement from them because they were there, or perhaps I’m just old and humorless. Or, maybe I think the show itself has such great humor, you can’t beat it. I do like seeing “Mister Parker” drunk at the end of the day, though – that was fun. (There are a LOT of “Mr. Parker” outtakes and deleted scenes.)

The extras on the Crisis on Infinite Earths disc, however, are amazing.

Is It Worth It? Yes! The episodes are great and they look amazing, and having Crisis is a wonderful bonus. Plus, I feel any sales of sets like this might make them think “hmm, we should do Season 7” a year from now. Also, if you’re aching for Legends of Tomorrow content in the long wait between the Season 5 finale and the premiere of Season 6 sometime next year, you are certainly in luck.
