NBC has renewed well-received musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, it was announced Thursday.
“We were overwhelmed by the number of people who fell in love with Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and how much joy it brought to everyone. We’re thrilled to bring it back and can’t wait to see how Zoey’s journey continues,” said Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Co-Presidents of Scripted Programming, NBC Entertainment.
Though the series had soft L+SD and L+7 numbers, averaging a 0.7 demo in the latter, it’s been especially strong on digital, generating more than half its 35-day viewership in the 18-49 demo from digital sources. The January 7th series premiere has now grown to a 3.3 rating in 18-49 and 7.9 million viewers to date when digital and linear delayed viewing is factored in. The full first season of Zoey is available on NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock.
With the renewal of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, the list of NBC scripted shows awaiting word on their fate includes Manifest, Indebted, and Bluff City Law. The network cancelled freshmen Perfect Harmony and Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector earlier this week.
From Austin Winsberg (Jake in Progress), Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist follows computer coder Zoey Clarke (Jane Levy), who discovers she has the ability to hear the innermost thoughts of people as songs. Initially, she questions her sanity, but after receiving guidance from her neighbor Mo (Alex Newell) and seeing her ability aid her in real life, Zoey realizes that this might be the blessing she needed.
In addition to Levy and Newell, the series stars Skylar Astin (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), John Clarence Stewart (What/If), Peter Gallagher (The OC), Mary Steenburgen (The Last Man on Earth), and Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls).
The season finale of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist aired Sunday, May 3rd on NBC.
