Deputy Cancelled by FOX After One Season

According to The Hollywood Reporter, FOX has cancelled freshman cop drama Deputy.

The news comes more than a week after the show’s March 26th season (now series) finale. It’s the first cancellation that broadcast has made since the coronavirus halted the television industry in its tracks, with Deputy the second freshman drama to be axed by FOX this season. Averaging a 0.58 in the 18-49 demo and about 3.6 million viewers, the series was a modest performer that FOX didn’t own outright; add in star Stephen Dorff’s $250,000 per episode salary and the cancellation isn’t a big surprise in any other way but timing.

Interestingly, FOX has still yet to renew a drama for the 2020-21 season. Thus far this season, they’ve lowered the ax on Deputy and ill-fated family drama Almost Family while renewing animated comedies The Simpsons and Bless the Harts, as well as reality staple Hell’s Kitchen. There are some obvious drama renewals still to come down (e.g. 9-1-1 and its Texas-set spinoff), but with so much of FOX’s scheduling space taken up by wrestling, football, and reality content, they’re not going to need many other dramas for next season.

From Will Beall (Aquaman), Deputy followed career lawman Bill Hollister (Dorff), who becomes acting sheriff of Los Angeles County after his superior unexpectedly passes. Though he’s more comfortable out in the field than in the boardroom, Hollister has to steady his department in this time of crisis and keep the men and women who serve under him from experiencing too much instability.

In addition to Dorff, the series starred Bex Taylor-Klaus (Scream), Yara Martinez (Jane the Virgin), Brian Van Holt (Cougar Town), Siena Goines (Andi Mack), and Shane Paul McGhie (Greenleaf).
