Humans co-creator Sam Vincent has confirmed that the well-regarded sci-fi series has been cancelled after three seasons.

The news comes a year and three days following the show’s third season premiere in the UK and about 10 months since it aired a double episode season finale in the US. Typically, shows that are in limbo that long tend to not make it out alive, but the show’s unique financials as a result of being a co-production gave fans a little hope that it could nose out a fourth (and likely final) season.
Not helping its case was the fact that AMC is undergoing a bit of a revamp, having recently cancelled Into the Badlands and The Son while becoming a second window platform for BBC America’s Killing Eve and Sundance Now’s A Discovery of Witches. While Humans generated positive reviews and had something of a cult audience in the US, it was already a low scheduling priority for AMC and with the network’s money and scheduling space tied up in more Walking Dead spinoffs and shows from sister networks, it was an unfortunately easy cut.
Based on Swedish sci-fi drama Real Humans, with Vincent and writing partner Jonathan Brackley developing for English television, Humans took place in a world where anthropomorphic robots called synths are tasked with doing menial jobs to make human life easier. The series explored themes of technology, consciousness, and personhood, as well as the impact that more omnipresent artificial intelligence could have on society.
