AMC has given a series order to an untitled anthology centered on stories about soul mates, set to premiere in 2020.
“This is AMC’s first foray into non-serialized story-telling, and we’re trying to do so in the boldest way possible. The show explores how technological innovation can impact the most delicate matters of the heart, and each episode will turn personal life choices into high-stakes drama. It’s a fresh yet relatable idea, portrayed through wildly entertaining tales with unexpected twists, humor, and meaningful emotion,” said David Madden, president of programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. “Will and Brett are immensely talented creators, and we are thrilled to have these new and observant voices on AMC.”
From Will Bridges (Stranger Things) and Brett Goldstein (Super Bob), the series is an episodic anthology with new stories and cast every episode. Taking place 15 years from now, it follows a world where it’s scientifically possible to find your soul mate.
It’s the first time that AMC has delved into episodic anthologies, a form that is currently undergoing a boom. Among the series that have helped this become a major TV trend are Netflix’s Easy, Black Mirror, and Heartstrings; Hulu’s Into the Dark; HBO’s Room 104; Amazon’s upcoming Modern Love; and the CBS All Access reboot of The Twilight Zone.
AMC’s current scripted slate includes The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, The Terror, Lodge 49, and McMafia. The network has Joe Hill adaptation NOS4A2 debuting this summer, with a Walking Dead spinoff and seasonal anthology Dispatches from Elsewhere, created by Jason Segel, also to come.
