CBS has renewed perennial utility player Man with a Plan for a fourth season, it was confirmed today.
The news comes as no surprise given the show’s sturdy but unspectacular ratings performance this season. It’s become something of CBS’s new Rules of Engagement, in that it can go any slot and do what it’s going to do; this might not be great for its episode count, considering that it hasn’t been in the fall since season one, but it seems like a secure aspect of the CBS schedule. As long as it can putter along and keep adding episodes to its syndication count, it should be able to live a fairly long life and go on to a solid off-network future.
What remains to be seen is how many of CBS’s other bubble comedies join Man with a Plan next season. The network has already ordered four new comedies and renewed cornerstones The Neighborhood, Young Sheldon, and Mom. In the wake of no Big Bang Theory, they’re likely not going to expand their comedy presence, so there’s a realistic chance that Man with a Plan is the last comedy renewal we see from CBS this season. Especially since Fam was a decidedly meh performer with no non-linear interest and a million miles to go before reaching syndication.
