Council of Dads Ordered to Series by NBC

NBC has given a series order to emotional friendship drama Council of Dads.

Based on Bruce Feiler’s memoir of the same name, with Tony Phelan and Joan Rater (Grey’s Anatomy) developing for television, Council of Dads follows Scott Perry (Tom Everett Scott), a man faced with a potentially terminal diagnosis. Along with his wife Robin (Sarah Wayne Callies), Scott pulls together a unique group of carefully chosen friends to support his family and guide them through the ups and downs of life’s many challenges.

In addition to Scott and Callies, Council of Dads stars Michele Weaver (Love Is__), J. August Richards (Angel), and newcomer Blue Chapman.

Council of Dads is the third pickup NBC has made in this pre-upfronts week, following legal drama Bluff City Law and immigration comedy Sunnyside. Its series order makes 2019-20 the third consecutive year NBC has tried to find a This Is Us-ish drama, having struck out with Rise and The Village the past two seasons. Additionally, it comes a season after ABC found some success with This Is Us-ish drama A Million Little Things.
