ABC has announced that Roseanne follow-up The Conners has been renewed for a second season.
“We are proud to be continuing the story of the iconic Conner family,” said ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke. “This team is fearless in their willingness to tackle contemporary issues with humor and heart, and I have no doubt they will continue to outdo themselves.”
Created in the wake of Roseanne‘s controversial cancellation in May 2018, The Conners follows the Conner family as they dealt with the loss of their matriarch. Considering its success, the delay in renewal came down to renegotiating with the show’s primary cast members, as Laurie Metcalf, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, and Lecy Goranson have all received significant salary bumps along with a piece of the show’s back-end.
The series averaged a 2.2 in the Live + 7 18-49 demo and 9.5 million viewers in the same metric, making it the number one new comedy of the season and top 20 among all broadcast shows in the demo. The Conners also did well with critics, generating the highest Metacritic score for a new 2018-19 show (75) along with a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The renewal of The Conners makes it the second ABC comedy to earn a pass to the 2019-20 season, joining the final go-around for Modern Family. ABC scripted shows already renewed include A Million Little Things, The Good Doctor, and Agents of SHIELD.
