Despite an abundance of positive feedback from critics and an outpouring from fans wishing for Season 4, Netflix has decided not to do with a fourth season of One Day at a Time.
“We’ve made the very difficult decision not to renew One Day At A Time for a fourth season,” Netflix tweeted today “The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season.”
#RenewODAAT has been all over Twitter yesterday, as fans really appreciated the series — which saw a Cuban-American family at its center and tackled many modern-day social issues much in the way the original CBS One Day at a Time series did.
Justina Machado starred at the center of the series as Penelope Alvarez. The show also featured the legendary EGOT winner Rita Moreno as her mother, and got a lot of praise for its sensitive handling of a coming-out story for daughter Elena (Isabella Gomez). Marcel Ruiz, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Todd Grinnell rounded out the cast, which also saw a lot of guest stars coming through including some from the original series.
Shepherding the series for a modern age were Executive Producers Gloria Calderón Kellett and Mike Royce; the iconic Norman Lear was also heavily involved.
Deadline notes that the series will be shopped around.
