CBS has announced that Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon has been renewed for seasons 3 and 4, taking it through the 2020-21 season and into syndication.
“Thanks to Chuck Lorre’s and Steve Molaro’s outstanding creative leadership, Young Sheldon has been a powerful performer for the Network with an audience that towers over most of the television landscape,” Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment, said today.
The renewal comes as no surprise given that Young Sheldon is averaging 14.5 million viewers per week and consistently ranks as one of the most watched comedies in the 18-49 demo. The series will also be of the utmost importance next season for CBS with The Big Bang Theory set to sign off for good in May. It will likely inherit the Thursdays at 8:00 slot that its mothership has been occupying for several seasons and be used to launch a new comedy while preserving the two-hour Thursday bloc in the process.
The renewal of Young Sheldon leaves Fam, Man with a Plan, Murphy Brown, and Happy Together as the lone CBS comedies whose fates have yet to be decided. While The Big Bang Theory is currently in a pre-announced final season, the network has given renewals to The Neighborhood and Mom, the latter of which also received a two-season renewal.
Young Sheldon airs Thursdays at 8:30 on CBS.
