    NBC Picks Up Undercovers

undercoversNBC has given a series order to Undercovers, a new series directed and produced by J.J. Abrams of LOST and Alias fame.

It’s the first new-series pickup to be announced by the network for Fall 2010.

The network has also released an official description for the show:

Outwardly, Steven Bloom (Boris Kodjoe, “Resident Evil: Afterlife”) and his wife, Samantha (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, “Bonekickers”), are a typical married couple who own a small catering company in Los Angeles and are helped by Samantha’s easily frazzled younger sister, Lizzy (Jessica Parker Kennedy, “Smallville”). Secretly, the duo were two of the CIA’s best spies until they fell in love on the job five years ago and retired. When fellow spy and friend Nash (Carter MacIntyre, “American Heiress”) goes missing while on the trail of a Russian arms dealer, the Blooms are reinstated by boss Carlton Shaw (Gerald McRaney, “Deadwood”) to locate and rescue Nash. The pair is thrust back into the world of espionage as they follow leads that span the globe — and Steven and Samantha realize that this supercharged, undercover lifestyle provides the excitement and romance that their marriage has been missing. Also starring is Ben Schwartz (NBC’s “Parks and Recreation”).

Sorry, but I usually have a pretty good “feel” for when a show is gonna bomb….and I smell the stench of failure all over this one before it even premieres. Sure doesn’t help that the cast is completely unknown, or that the hubby/wife spy thing is derivative, or that it’s on NBC, of all places.

This is a sure-thing bomb. Not an ounce of interest, mark it down.

Jonah, if you’re right remind me of this and I will make a “Jonah called this” headline when it happens.

I’m serious! Not suggesting you’re wrong either. I just think it’s funny when a speculation turns out to be eerily accurate.

So, this is going to be “Chuck” without the BuyMore?

    4. chase on May 4, 2010 10:47 am

I thought about the chuck thing too because now on chuck we look really after last nights ep we have this show already on the air

Another Mr & Mrs Smith? :/

    6. Chuck needs a 4th season! on May 6, 2010 5:10 am

Just as long as this doesn’t replace Chuck I’m cool. This could actually be a good lean-in to Chuck(or the other way around)(Though no way is this gonna be as good as Chuck, just saying). Sounds like NBC is lookinf for a spy theme night

    7. Jonah on Oct 7, 2010 5:39 am

You said to remind you… While Undercovers received more tune-in than I ever imagined (due to, I believe, horrible competition on Wed. nights), the three-week declining numbers, courtesy of MediaWeek, indicate that the spy drama is not long for this life.

      Undercovers (NBC)
      9/22/10: 6.2/10
      9/29/10: 5.1/ 8
      10/06/10: 4.4/ 7

    8. Craig Byrne on Oct 7, 2010 9:47 am

It’s kind of funny that I’d totally forgotten about that, Jonah… you definitely are right. I thought for sure this would be a hit.

Though as things stand, three episodes in, I haven’t tuned in either. Somewhere along the line my interest evaporated completely, and I have no interest in seeing it. The rest of America apparently agreed.

I worry The Cape will be a bigger bomb, though – what do you think there?
