Last year, The CW produced The Selection, a pilot based on the novel by Kiera Cass where a young woman named America Singer (played in the pilot by Aimee Teegarden) is plucked from a Hunger Games like existence complete with class systems, but instead of being forced to compete with others for their lives, she was to compete for the hand of a prince. Basically, it was Hunger Games meets The Bachelor, as envisioned for TV by Sarah Fain and Elizabeth Craft.
The filmed pilot had some interesting moments and notions, but the network ultimately passed on it, choosing instead to pick up only five of that year’s pilots to series. (The others that were passed on were Shelter and Joey Dakota) The CW’s Mark Pedowitz did say they were “redeveloping” the project, and unlike some other times when that has been said, it seems he really meant it this time: At this morning’s TCA executive session, Pedowitz says a new script has “just come in” and that it is “very well done.” However, that doesn’t guarantee a new pilot will be shot. “We have not made our pilot choices, and yes, it’s still in contention,” he is quick to point out.
