Deadline is reporting that upcoming OWN drama David Makes Man has added eight cast members.

Akili McDowell (The Astronaut Wives Club) is set as former block drug dealer David, who lives in a housing project in Homestead, Florida while taking the bus every day to a charter school for the academically gifted. Though David is adept at switching between his two personas and juggling the two very different lives he’s made for himself, that duality soon starts to take a toll.
The Cosby Show‘s Phylicia Rashad will play Dr. Woods-Trap, an intimidating teacher at David’s school who sees something special in him and soon becomes his fiercest advocate. Nathaniel Logan McIntyre (Magic Camp and Barry) portrays David’s best friend Seren, a boy who holds painful secrets. Isaiah Johnson (Hamilton) is set as David’s inquisitive and thoughtful friend Sky. Ade Chike Torbert (East Los High) will be seen as Raynan, whose ties to the drug trade drive a wedge in his relationship with David. Jordan Bolger (Peaky Blinders) will play Shinobi, Raynan’s second-in-command who doesn’t exactly have a great connection with David, either. Cayden K. Williams (Girls Trip) will portray David’s younger brother JG, whose roughness masks a vulnerability he doesn’t like to share with other people. Travis Coles (Liza on Demand) will portray Ms. Elijah, a genderqueer resident of David’s housing project who watches out for him and JG when their mother is away.
David Makes Man is part of a drama slate for OWN that includes Greenleaf, Queen Sugar, Love Is, The Haves and the Have Nots, and If Loving You is Wrong. It’s one of two new dramas that should premiere in 2019, joining Will Packer’s soapy Ambitions.
