Hulu has added acclaimed drama Friday Night Lights to its increasingly robust streaming library, with the series now available to stream. The news comes not long after the rights to the series, which aired on both NBC and DirecTV’s 101 Network, were also picked up by Amazon after expiring on Netflix.
The addition of Friday Night Lights is the latest in a series of moves Hulu has made to increase its value to subscribers. Whereas Amazon is sinking money into broader fare like its Lord of the Rings series and Netflix is flooding the market with original scripted content in lieu of keeping its library in tact, Hulu has snatched the rights to everything from ER to NYPD Blue, ABC’s TGIF lineup, Parenthood, 30 Rock, Agent Carter, and Will & Grace.
Based on the H. G. Bissinger novel of the same name and developed for television by Jason Katims (Parenthood), Friday Night Lights takes place in the small town of Dillon, Texas and focuses on the vaunted Dillon Panthers football team, fronted by then-new coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler). In addition to following the team’s progress on the field, the series follows the journeys of several players (and figures tangentially related to the team) off of it.
In addition to Chandler, Friday Night Lights stars Connie Britton (Nashville), Aimee Teegarden (Star-Crossed), Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther), Zach Gilford (Good Girls), Jurnee Smollett (Underground), Matt Lauria (Kingdom), Taylor Kitsch (Waco), Gaius Charles (Grey’s Anatomy), Minka Kelly (The Path), Adrianne Palicki (Agents of SHIELD), Jesse Plemons (Black Mirror), and Scott Porter (Hart of Dixie).
