BBC America has opted to cancel cult sci-fi dramedy Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency after two seasons.
“We are beyond proud of this brilliant original series and so appreciative of the outstanding team behind it including Max Landis, Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, and many many others,” said BBC America in a statement. “It was a privilege to work with this talented and passionate group of writers, producers and actors on these two seasons of Dirk. Thanks also to the passionate fans who embraced this fantastically novel world.”
Based on the Douglas Adams novels of the same name and developed for television by Max Landis (Chronicle), Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency followed holistic detective Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett), a man so in tune with the inter-connectivity of the universe that he focuses his detective-ing on the seemingly obscure cases placed in his lap by fate. Along the way, Dirk recruits bellhop Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood) and former bodyguard Farah Black (Jade Eshete) to follow him down the rabbit hole as he investigates a time loop-y billionaire murder and a cold case where the mythical land of Wendimoor plays a significant role.
With the cancellation of Dirk Gently, BBC America’s lone scripted series is Doctor Who. In recent months, networks like MTV, VH1, and CMT have been getting out of the scripted business considering Peak TV and whatnot, while the likes of Bravo and TV Land have significant cut down on their scripted footprint. It remain to be seen whether BBC America will continuing producing its own original content or whether it will remain an appendage of the BBC, comprised primarily of re-airs and unscripted.
Meanwhile, series creator Max Landis tweeted (see below) that the show could conceivably survive for a third season on Netflix if the show makes a big enough splash when season two premieres on Netflix January 5th.
The series finale of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency aired this past Saturday on BBC America.
Correct, but we would need big Netflix numbers in January. https://t.co/7A9JRNH57h
