Variety is reporting that Emmy nominee Olivia Colman (The Night Manager) has joined the yet-to-be-ordered third and fourth seasons of praised Netflix drama The Crown. She’ll be replacing Claire Foy in the role of Queen Elizabeth II as the series, which has already began pre-production on said seasons, goes forward in time to document Elizabeth’s lengthy rule.
From Peter Morgan (The Queen), The Crown follows then-Princess Elizabeth from her wedding to Prince Philip (Matt Smith) in 1947 through present day. The first season culminated in 1955 with the disintegration of Elizabeth’s sister Margaret’s engagement to Peter Townsend, with season two set to cover from the Suez Crisis in 1956 through the retirement of Harold Macmillan, the Queen’s third Prime Minister.
In addition to her role on the AMC/Channel 4 miniseries, Colman has appeared on the likes of Broadchurch, Peep Show, and Rev. It’s as yet unclear what other roles will be recast alongside Elizabeth and who will be joining the series alongside Colman.
The second season of The Crown is set to be released Friday, December 7th on Netflix.
