According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spike has opted to cancel Stephen King drama The Mist after one season.
Based on the King novella and developed for television by Christian Torpe (Rita), The Mist followed the citizens of Bridgeville, Maine as their town gets enveloped by an unexplained mist that keeps them trapped. The series chronicled the isolation of several pockets of citizens and how being cooped up with one another brings out secrets long thought buried.
The Mist was Spike’s first attempt at getting into on-going scripted content in quite a few years, but it drew mediocre ratings, had no acclaim/buzz, and suffered from airing on a lame duck network, as Spike will be rebranding as Paramount Network come January. Therefore, the show, like the upcoming second season of Shannara Chronicles, would’ve had to overperform if it had any shot at moving networks.
This has been a mixed summer for King, whose It premiered earlier this month to strong reviews and even stronger box office. He already has an adaptation of novella N in the works with Gaumont and Netflix original film Gerald’s Game premiering September 29th, among other projects in the pipeline.
The series finale of The Mist aired Thursday, August 24th at 10:00 on Spike.
