HBO has given acclaimed late night series Last Week Tonight with John Oliver a renewal through 2020, producing 30 episodes per season. The series, now in its fourth season, was nominated for eight Emmys this year.
“We are thrilled to have John Oliver as an integral part of the HBO family and to continue to share his comedic brilliance with the world,” HBO Programming president Casey Bloys said in today’s news, calling Oliver’s “extraordinary genius for rich and intelligent commentary…second to none.”
The Washington Post has information on Tokens on the Small Screen, a study done by professors and scholars at six California universities looked at 242 broadcast, cable and digital platform shows that aired during the 2015-16 season and tallied the numbers, screen time and portrayals of characters of Asian or Pacific Islander descent among 2,000 TV characters.

AMC has put an untitled drama based on the bestselling nonfiction book They Can’t Kill Us All: Ferguson, Baltimore, and a New Era in America’s Racial Justice from Wesley Lowery in development. The series will reflect current events and race relations through the stories and voices of fictional characters.
ABC has bought Glass Houses, a real estate drama based on the life of Real Housewife Kyle Richards. The series follows aspiring real estate mogul Anisa as she launches her own company and challenges the dominance of the grand dame of the L.A. real estate world, her former employer and mother-in-law, Dahli.
CBS is developing an untitled medical drama executive produced by Dr. Oz. The series revolves around two surgeons — one who is grounded in hard data and the other who pursues a dual mission of faith and science.
