Almost two months ahead of its premiere, the revival of Will & Grace has been renewed for a second go-around by NBC, the network announced today. The second revival season is set to have 13 episodes, up from the initial 12 this coming season is set to feature but down from the 16 episodes season one will ultimately feature. It’s as yet unclear whether there’s any room to add episodes to season two’s order.
Will & Grace joins the recent trend of networks reviving and rebooting shows that were proven performers in the past. This past season, broadcast welcomed new incarnations of Prison Break and 24, with the likes of Full House, Gilmore Girls, and The X-Files having already made their return. As television becomes more congested with scripted content, it can be harder for shows to break out, meaning that platforms are turning to these reboots, as well as spinoffs and shows related to well-known intellectual property, as a way of breaking through the clutter.
From David Kohan and Max Mutchnik (The Wonder Years), Will & Grace stars Eric McCormack (Perception) and Debra Messing (Smash) as co-dependent roommates Will Truman and Grace Adler, who have been best friends since college. The series, which also stars Megan Mullally (Childrens Hospital) and Sean Hayes (Sean Saves the World), is one of a select few shows whose entire core ensemble won an Emmy for their role. Its controversial series finale will reportedly be ignored upon the show’s revival later this year.
